We Saved Her Remote Alaska House… Then Finally Met Her

Last winter in Port Protection, Alaska, we stumbled into a project that became one of the biggest stories of our first year aboard Alaskan Gypsy. Trees had crashed onto Liz’s remote waterfront house, a landslide had shifted the foundation, and the house was beginning to move downhill. Liz wasn’t even there. She was watching from Juneau while Scott worked through the Southeast Alaska winter trying to save a home we would eventually learn held generations of her family history. After months of tree removal, foundation work and repairs, we left Port Protection without ever meeting Liz in person. Now we’re back. For the first time, Audrey sits down with Liz inside the house to hear the story we never knew: how her mother came to Port Protection, why she built this house beside the ocean, the family history held within its walls, what it was like watching strangers on YouTube try to save it, and what it meant to come home this summer and find it still standing.
