Tom Cunliffe finds a Northumberland Coble and remembers his youth

The Northumberland Coble, along with its neighbour in Yorkshire, is a unique open fishing and pilot vessel. I used one years ago as a young man. The working boats are nearly all gone now except for a few restored originals and new builds run by enthusiasts who keep the faith alive. I found this one derelict on the coast, looking out towards the North Sea and Norway.
