ZAFFIRO III is a particularly interesting example of that concept. Join Katia as she explores this 26.7-metre yacht, starting with one of its most distinctive features: the enormous open aft deck. Designed to accommodate a tender and jet ski while cruising, it transforms into a spacious waterside living area when the toys are launched. A concealed hydraulic crane and lowering swim platform make the arrangement remarkably practical. Inside, the decision to move the wheelhouse to the flybridge has opened up the entire main deck. Large expanses of glass, a relaxed saloon, dining area and open galley create a space that feels more like a contemporary waterfront apartment than a conventional motor yacht. The emphasis is very much on bringing people together. The flybridge offers another versatile living area, with an opening louvred roof, air conditioning, a bar and plenty of room for entertaining. Below deck, four cabins accommodate nine guests, including a full-beam owner's suite that particularly impresses Katia with its proportions, natural light and generous bathroom. There is also some serious engineering behind the design. Triple Volvo Penta IPS engines provide a cruising speed of approximately 20 knots and responsive joystick manoeuvring, while zero-speed stabilisation adds comfort at anchor. ZAFFIRO III has also benefited from extensive maintenance and technical works during 2026. As Katia discovers throughout the walkthrough, the real appeal of ZAFFIRO III is not simply her unusual layout. It's how effectively Sanlorenzo has used the available space to create a yacht that feels open, comfortable and genuinely enjoyable to live aboard. After meeting Samuel Xu, who has extensive knowledge of China's yachting industry, I came across MIRAVA, a company developing a 7.9-metre boat with a detachable, self-propelled sunbed and a smart wristband that allows the boat to follow you through the water. It's an extraordinary concept, although I have a few questions about how it works in practice! I also discovered ePropulsion, a company founded by four engineering students that has grown into an international manufacturer of electric marine propulsion systems. Then there's ANAVI, whose Pininfarina-designed carbon-fibre electric jet ski promises speeds approaching 60 knots, along with some interesting navigation and safety technology. These developments are part of a much bigger story about China's growing presence in the international boating market. I'm now looking into visiting Chinese shipyards, including Chaoli, to explore their construction methods and yachts for our Yacht Builders channel. It's the people who own her. And I can honestly say that TAMSEN, a beautiful 52-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht, is one of the finest examples of that I've ever encountered. Imagine eleven teenagers setting off to sail around the world together in the 1970s. Now imagine those same friends, nearly fifty years later, still enjoying life at sea together, this time aboard a magnificent sailing superyacht they had built specifically for themselves. That's the story behind TAMSEN, and it's a rather wonderful one. I met Steve Firestone, one of the owners, the day before filming, and he explained how their extraordinary friendship had shaped practically every aspect of the yacht. Take the galley, for example. On most Perini Navis of this size, you'd expect to find the bridge in that part of the yacht. But Steve and his friends had other ideas. They wanted a proper country kitchen, somewhere everyone could gather, cook, talk and enjoy each other's company. So they put the bridge upstairs instead. And frankly, I think it's a brilliant decision. Then there's the flybridge, with its Jacuzzi, bar and generous seating areas, the sheltered aft cockpit and even the two large tenders designed to get everyone ashore. The yacht has been built around a very simple idea: bringing people together. There are even places where guests can sleep under the stars, something Steve tells me has been enjoyed by both children and adults over the years. Of course, TAMSEN is also a serious sailing yacht. Built in 2007 and refitted again in 2026, when she received new Doyle sails, she's travelled to an extraordinary number of destinations. Her practical layout, engineering spaces and flexible accommodation reflect the experience of owners who have spent much of their lives sailing rather than simply sitting in marinas. I must admit that when I heard Steve would have several friends and family members aboard during filming, I wondered how we were going to manage. Filming a walkthrough with guests on board can be rather challenging. But within minutes of arriving, I realised how fortunate we were. People were sitting together in the galley, laughing, telling stories and offering us coffee and something to eat. Ten of the original eleven teenage sailors were aboard that morning. There was a warmth and happiness about the place that no yacht brochure could ever convey. And that, I think, is what makes TAMSEN so special. She's not simply a beautiful yacht with an impressive cruising history. She's been the setting for decades of friendships, family gatherings and adventures that have taken her owners around the world. Steve also sat down with me for a separate interview, where he tells the extraordinary story of those early sailing adventures, how they eventually came to build TAMSEN and why the family has now decided to sell her. I really do recommend watching it, because it gives an entirely different perspective on what yacht ownership can mean. It's time to get Nauti Dogs ready for her next chapter! Before putting my 56-foot sailboat up for sale, I've got a few last-minute repairs and upgrades to tackle. I'm calibrating the engine RPM gauge, replacing battery connections, troubleshooting bilge pump issues, and taking care of a few other things to get the boat back into shipshape condition. Once the work is done, we leave the marina and make the short trip over to the boatyard, where Nauti Dogs will be hauled out and stored on land while I'm away. The goal is to get her looking good, running properly, and ready for potential buyers. Hopefully, by the time I return, she'll have found a new owner! In this comparison, I take a closer look at TAMSEN, RED DRAGON and METEOR to see just how much yacht you get for your money. TAMSEN, built by Perini Navi in 2007, is the largest at 52.41 metres, with an impressive 463 GT and accommodation for up to 15 guests. RED DRAGON, delivered by Alloy Yachts in 2008, measures 51.7 metres and offers a beach club, spacious guest accommodation and a tender garage that doubles as a plunge pool. METEOR, built by Royal Huisman in 2007, takes a completely different approach. Inspired by traditional Gloucester fishing schooners, she prioritises sailing performance over interior volume, with accommodation for just six guests and a reported top speed under sail of approximately 20 knots. Perhaps the most interesting comparison concerns their sailing rigs. TAMSEN is a ketch, RED DRAGON a sloop and METEOR a schooner. We examine how these configurations differ, along with their sail areas, displacement, engines, cruising speeds and range. And, of course, we look at the asking prices. With two of these yachts on the market at the time of recording, the differences in design, interior space and value are particularly interesting. ‘Serenata’ is a 2018 Hanse 388, listed exclusively for sale with YOTI on Pittwater. Designed by Judel/Vrolijk & Co and built by Hanse Yachts, the 388 carries the hallmarks that have made Hanse one of the world’s largest and most successful sailing yacht builders. The self-tacking jib and in-mast furling mainsail make ‘Serenata’ easy to sail, while the twin-wheel cockpit provides plenty of room to move around. She is a one-owner boat that presents incredibly well. It is clear she has been well cared for and has enjoyed a relatively easy life cruising around Pittwater. Below deck, the popular two-cabin layout provides generous accommodation while allowing for an enlarged galley, creating an enjoyable space to prepare meals and drinks. Without a third cabin, there is also a dedicated storage area aft to port. French Oak furniture, Delight Oak flooring and upgraded grey upholstery create a modern, inviting interior, while a custom comfort mattress has been added to the forward cabin. Blinds with flyscreens and 12V fans in both cabins are ideal for Pittwater’s summer evenings, while an Eberspächer diesel heater keeps things comfortable during the winter months. The Elvstrøm Dacron sails comprise a fully battened mainsail and a self-tacking jib, both on furling systems. Two electric Lewmar 40ST winches and two manual Lewmar 40ST winches are complemented by ten Spinlock clutches, with an adjustable backstay completing the sail controls. The cockpit features a bimini, dodger, connecting panel between the two, cockpit cushions and wheel covers. A Zodiac 270 dinghy with an aluminium floor and Yamaha 6hp four-stroke outboard are included, making trips ashore easy. Navigation is taken care of by a comprehensive B&G electronics package, including a 9-inch Zeus³ chartplotter at the helm, two Triton multifunction displays, a hydraulic ram autopilot, a V50 VHF at the chart table, a B&G handheld VHF and an AIS transponder. The electrical system is equally well equipped, with twin 160Ah AGM house batteries installed in August 2024 and monitored by a Victron battery monitor. A 250W solar panel mounted on the bimini feeds through a smart charge controller, while a Mastervolt charger and 240V shore power provide additional charging options. Power comes from a Yanmar 3YM30AE 29hp diesel engine with just 348 hours. The engine and saildrive were serviced in May 2026. ‘Serenata’ is a well-presented, recently serviced and thoughtfully equipped cruiser, ideal for those looking to enjoy easy sailing on Pittwater and further afield.
