9,500 miles into our 10,500-mile journey… this was the stretch 90% of people told us not to sail. Bab el-Mandeb — pirate waters between the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. It starts at night. Ships with AIS turned off. Shadows on the horizon. Then our starboard engine stops cooling. No raw water. No cooling. Overheat it here… and we lose it for good. Hours in the engine room. Heat. Sweat. Exhaustion. Finally — water flows again. That night, the GPS flips to Indian Ocean. We made it through. But we’re still not cleared into Djibouti… and over 1,000 miles of high-risk water still lie ahead.
