Surviving on Coconuts & Fish in Ontong Java
When Paradise Becomes a Trap: Running Out of Food at Ontong Java đĨĨđš They call it the "Sailing Dream," but sometimes the dream feels a lot like survival. We finally caught a break in the weather to sail across the Ontong Java atoll to visit the main village. It was Sollyâs first time under sail, and she was greeted by the biggest fish sheâs ever seenâa Yellowfin Tuna caught on a local lure made from a screwdriver handle, lollipop sticks, and chicken feathers. But the celebration was short-lived. A massive cyclone forming near Fiji began pushing 40-knot winds toward our unprotected reef. Just as the weather turned, so did the local politics. We found ourselves in a tense standoff with representatives of the House of Chiefs, who demanded an "anchoring fee." While we always donate to the communities we visit, being forced to pay while running out of food and supplies creates a challenging dynamic in a place that should be paradise. With the nearest grocery store hundreds of miles away and a 6-day crossing to Micronesia looming, we had to get serious. In this episode, we share the raw experience of spearfishing when it is no longer a hobby, but a necessity. Every fish counts when your rations are at zero. We also share our daily routine of training Solly to swim, ensuring sheâs prepared for the rough seas ahead.
