Perry–designed Far Harbour 39 is unlike almost any cruising sailboat ever built. This remarkable boat was created with one very unusual design brief: build the largest cruising sailboat possible that can fit inside a standard 40-foot shipping container — hull, keel, mast and all. Why? So owners could ship their own boat anywhere in the world and start cruising without having to make long ocean passages. Much has been written about this boat and we have put some links below for further reading. In this episode of BoatFools Sailing, Canadian Ken and Tristram Coburn tour Hull No. 1 of the Far Harbour 39, a truly innovative cruising sailboat that proves brilliant design can flourish even under strict constraints. CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro 00:15 Canadian Ken and I introduce the Far Harbour 39 01:33 Up On Deck 06:42 The Cockpit 09:51 Below Decks! 14:22 The Head & V-Berth 18:29 The Yanmar Engine 20:29 A Near Fall! 21:02 The Rudder, Keel & Hull 25:13 Final Thoughts! Despite the narrow 7’5” beam required to fit inside a container, Perry managed to create a boat that: • Sails surprisingly well • Handles offshore conditions confidently • Offers comfortable accommodations for a cruising couple • Can be disassembled and reassembled in a boatyard for shipping around the world The result is a long, slender, efficient hull that moves beautifully through the water while delivering a bright pilothouse interior and practical cruising layout. The boat we toured, Inbox, is Hull No. 1 of the Far Harbour 39 and she has already visited many corners of the world — with a longest passage of just 107 nautical miles. Instead of crossing oceans, she simply sails locally, gets loaded into a container, and ships to the next cruising ground. She remains in good condition, well equipped, and ready for her next adventure. Join us as we take a full tour of this fascinating container-ship-able cruising sailboat and explore why this clever design might be one of Robert Perry’s most intriguing boats ever built.
