Out running a hurricane | Refitting a Hunter Sailboat

Now that the fiberglass rebuild work has been completed on the rudder it’s time to start getting the rest of the hull back in shape. We have 685 sq ft of surface to prep and paint before Hurricane Ian comes knocking on our door step. The blisters are almost repaired and smoothed out as to not cause any friction on the hull. This was a definite art of applying compounds to the correct specifications, then allowing it to catalyze and dry before applying another coat and eventually sanding and smoothing to the perfect finish. An art for sure. Sanding is something we have gotten very good at over the past couple of days. As hard as you try you cannot keep the particles of blue ablative paint off your skin and in your lungs. The thing about ablative paint is that it has copper in it, making it toxic to breath. The copper is what reduces biofouling or barnacle growth on the bottom of your boat. So, as you can imagine by the end of this little project not only were we exhausted but a little hoarse as well. The other thing about ablative paint is, even though it dries very fast you have to make sure that the surface is completely dry before you start and the paint needs some time to adhered before it gets wet. Welcome our new challenge. Hurricane Ian had already struck the south eastern states and was making his nasty way up the coast.
