Our Longest Night of the Atlantic Crossing | S6 E05

Squall after squall. After weeks of crossing the Atlantic, we set sail from Fernando de Noronha, Brazil, on the final leg to Tobago and the Caribbean. It's almost 2,000 nautical miles, with a helpful current behind us and the doldrums waiting somewhere in the middle. The first few days are some of the most beautiful sailing of the whole crossing: spinnaker flying, full moon rising, kids baking and fishing, and a family planning session on the back of a paper chart. But north of the equator, the weather we'd been watching for finally arrives. Just after midnight, the first squall hits. Then another, and another. What follows is twelve hours of wind, rain and rough seas, and the longest night of our Atlantic crossing.
