OOPS! We LOSE THE STEERING under way... | SAILING WAYZGOOSE WARRIOR Ep 6

After almost two months exploring the River Tamar thinking that we were going to settle down there for the winter, we decided to carry on sailing and keep travelling during the winter. We sailed over a hundred nautical miles from Cargreen (a lovely little village up the River Tamar) to Portland Harbour over three days. On the first day we sailed 30nm in 6 hours from Cargreen to Salcombe and we spent the night at anchor in Starehole Bay. The next day we woke up to a beautiful day and sailed 27nm to Brixham which took us 7.5 hours. We stayed two nights on the sailing club pontoon which wasn’t the most comfortable place to be moored to… with a club house full of lovely people. Whilst in Brixham we caught up with a couple we met earlier in the season. After a couple of nights we decided to motor sail to Portland as there wouldn’t be another weather window for at least a week, strong winds were coming and they wouldn't be blowing in our favour. We were both really nervous about this passage as we had to time it right to get around Portland Bill with the best currents. We chose to take the inshore passage, you get a nice view of the lighthouse, the Shambles and the currents are weaker. Apart from the steering ram coming undone (which got us a bit worried as we were in the middle of Lyme Bay) we didn’t have any other problems and made it save and sound to Portland. It took us 11 hours to motor sail 51nm. On this trip we had it all!, rain, sun, rainbows, wind, dolphins… and an incredible sunset as we set anchor for the night.
