OK, OK, so making cushions isn't for everyone but sewing is an essential skill you need to learn for sailing and why not practise by making some nice box cushioons for the boat. Actually these cushions serve 2 purposes. They're firstly the mattress for sleeping on so quite essential for cruising, and secondly they're cushions that will just make life that little bit nicer when sitting sailing all day long!
