We have just arrived in Sumba, a culturally rich and naturally pristine Indonesian Island. Unlike many tourist islands in Indonesia, Sumba is undeveloped and full of natural beauty. Unfortunately though due to its distance from the capital, low population density, and dry climate; Sumba is one of the poorest regions in Indonesia. Because of the dire economic reality in Sumba, most children get pulled away from school as soon as they can contribute to their family's income. Before our arrival, we were researching Sumba when we found out about the Sumba Hospitality Foundation, a hospitality and sustainability school that is providing young locals with an unprecedented opportunity for education and career growth.
