From an Alaska Sawmill to Our Sailboat

Living aboard an old steel schooner means there is always something to build, change or figure out. This time, we needed more storage aboard the Alaskan Gypsy, so Scott headed ashore to his friends sawmill in Southeast, Alaska to see what he could find. What started as a hunt through piles of leftover lumber turned into beautiful old-growth Alaska yellow cedar, including pieces that otherwise may have ended up in the burn pile. Back aboard the Gypsy, Scott puts it to work building simple shelves while we continue figuring out what the eventual interior of this boat will become. One of the things we love most about living and traveling through Southeast Alaska is learning to work with what’s around us. Local materials, local people, old skills, unexpected opportunities, and projects that take shape as we go. These shelves may be temporary, but they also gave us a chance to see what weathered Alaska yellow cedar could look like throughout the Gypsy someday.
