Legend has it that Greek god Odysseus was shipwrecked on Mljet Island many years ago and swam to a cave for shelter where he stayed captivated by the beautiful nymph Calypso for 7 years. We've gone in search of said cave and found that the tricky part is how to get there! Odysseus's cave is located close to the southern coastal village of Babino Polje and can only be accessed on foot by following the path. If you're staying in Polace or Pomena on Mljet Island, your best bet is to hire a car or scooter to get to the small village leading you to this magical cave! When you arrive at Odysseus's cave you'll be greeted with incredible turquoise blue water, a cave, cliff face, and a small shelter with a local selling cool drinks. Our top tip: pack a picnic and spend all day at this magical, mythical destination! Local Stories is a series dedicated to providing an insight into the quirky aspects of Croatian people, culture, and traditions! Do you have an interesting local story?
