Episode 102 - From Sea State to Stew State

I’ve never been fond of a nor’easter, and any sailor worth their salt will likely agree. For those fortunate enough to be unfamiliar with this beast, a nor’easter is exactly what it sounds like: a stiff blow charging in from the northeast, usually carrying cold rain, colder wind, and a generally rotten attitude. Out on the Atlantic, the wind has miles upon miles of open water to stretch its legs. With all that fetch, it stirs the sea into a frothy, angry mess of steep waves and whitecaps. The Chesapeake Bay isn't spared either. When a nor’easter comes calling, the East Coast hunkers down, low-lying waterfronts take a pounding, and Mother Nature reminds everyone who really holds the helm. Fortunately, Toni and I are safely tucked into our home rather than riding it out on the hook. And what does one do when a nor’easter rattles the windows and growls through the rigging? First, prepare a hearty, soul-warming meal. Second, conduct a thorough inspection of the wine stores to ensure at least two bottles of deep red are standing by for emergency morale support. Safety first, after all. So while the wind whistles, the rain drums on the deck ashore, and the seas do their best impression of a washing machine, we'll be riding out the storm from the comfort of our bunkers with full bellies and topped-up glasses. Fair winds, safe passages, and well-protected anchorages to all our friends caught out there. May your ground tackle hold, your foul-weather gear stay dry, and your coffee remain in the mug.
