Dutch vs French St. Martin: Cheap Lagoon Living… Then We LEFT

We explore Sint Maarten starting on the Dutch side — from planes screaming overhead at Maho Beach to cruising the surprisingly affordable liveaboard scene on Simpson Bay Lagoon. Living aboard here can be way cheaper than you might expect, and the vibe is lively, social, and easygoing. Then we clear out and sail around to the French side of the island… and the mood changes fast. Marigot Bay still shows heavy scars from Hurricane Irma in 2017 — with derelict boats, visible damage, and a much quieter feel overall. After dropping anchor, we quickly realize this isn’t where we want to stay — so we pull it back up and sail over to Grand Case, where the atmosphere, food, and anchorage are way more our speed.
