So enough was enough and I ripped the entire unit out and replaced with a 24v #dometic fridge/freezer. Being in Australia - the land of the great outback - there were plenty to choose from. This not only meant it would be easier to repair/replace in the future but it also gave us (and future owners) far easier access to the water tank below.
