Dell Venue 8 Pro touch panel firmware and Windows update battery issues

I try to install the newest touch panel firmware, dated 1st Feb 2014. The firmware appears to be new but doesn't work to update the tablet. I also installed all the windows updates up to the 27th Jan hoping that they had ironed out the connected standby battery drain issues - I was wrong.
