How do the COLREGs define every vessel at sea? COLREGs Rule 3 explained: all 13 general definitions of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs / IRPCS), shown with true-to-scale animation. Every rule of the road at sea depends on what kind of vessel you are looking at and what she is doing right now. Who gives way, which lights and day shapes she shows, what she must do in restricted visibility — all of it starts with Rule 3. In this video we go through each definition one by one: what counts as a vessel, a power-driven vessel, a sailing vessel, a vessel engaged in fishing, a seaplane, a vessel not under command (NUC), a vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuvre (RAM), a vessel constrained by her draught (CBD), what "underway" really means, length and breadth, vessels in sight of one another, restricted visibility and WIG craft. ⏱ Chapters 0:00 Why the definitions matter 0:22 "Except where the context otherwise requires" 0:35 (a) Vessel 0:54 (b) Power-driven vessel 1:08 (c) Sailing vessel — and motor-sailing 1:34 (d) Vessel engaged in fishing — and why trolling doesn't count 2:09 (e) Seaplane 2:29 (f) Vessel not under command (NUC) 2:57 (g) Vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuvre (RAM) 3:50 (h) Vessel constrained by her draught (CBD) 4:41 (i) Underway — and making way 5:05 (j) Length and breadth 5:20 (k) In sight of one another — radar contact vs visual 5:45 (l) Restricted visibility 6:04 (m) Wing-in-ground (WIG) craft 6:35 Summary Disclaimer: for general information and entertainment purposes only.
