After meeting Samuel Xu, who has extensive knowledge of China's yachting industry, I came across MIRAVA, a company developing a 7.9-metre boat with a detachable, self-propelled sunbed and a smart wristband that allows the boat to follow you through the water. It's an extraordinary concept, although I have a few questions about how it works in practice! I also discovered ePropulsion, a company founded by four engineering students that has grown into an international manufacturer of electric marine propulsion systems. Then there's ANAVI, whose Pininfarina-designed carbon-fibre electric jet ski promises speeds approaching 60 knots, along with some interesting navigation and safety technology. These developments are part of a much bigger story about China's growing presence in the international boating market. I'm now looking into visiting Chinese shipyards, including Chaoli, to explore their construction methods and yachts for our Yacht Builders channel.
