BoatTechTV - What is Hull Speed?

4,602 Visninger· 23/02/18

In episode 6 of BoatTechTV we pause for a moment and revisit the previous episode to simplify the description of hull speed. The episode explains where the term comes from and how it is used in the real world to determine the suggested maximum speed of a particular hull design. Hull Speed is very useful for sizing an engine and propeller. It gives a good robust method to determine the top speed of a displacement vessel. This condition is met when the vessel has a crest at the bow and stern, that is one wavelength on the waterline. This was deemed a physical limit for sailing ships as they lacked the power (no engines) to push through this increase in resistance that it caused - hence the term!
