Beginners Guide to Latitude and Longitude
Nautical latitude and longitude are used to determine a vessel's position on the surface of the Earth. Nautical latitude is measured in degrees north or south of the equator, which is defined as 0 degrees latitude. The equator is the line of latitude that circles the Earth at its widest point, dividing the Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere. Nautical latitude is used in navigation to determine a vessel's position in relation to the equator. Nautical longitude, on the other hand, is measured in degrees east or west of the Prime Meridian, which is defined as 0 degrees longitude. The Prime Meridian runs through Greenwich, England, and serves as the reference point for all other longitudes. Nautical longitude is used in navigation to determine a vessel's position in relation to the Prime Meridian. To determine a vessel's position using nautical latitude and longitude, mariners use navigational charts, GPS (Global Positioning System), or other electronic navigation tools. By plotting their vessel's latitude and longitude on a chart, mariners can determine their position, plan their route, and avoid navigational hazards.
