62 - Hawaii: Land of Volcanoes, Beaches and Pearl Harbor

After helping safely deliver s/v Julia across the Pacific, we were in no hurry to leave Hawaii, especially since neither of us had ever visited before! We spent a week in total which included a quick road trip around the big island of Hawaii (yes, it's its own island) visiting the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park as well as a few of the more colorful beaches. But I have to say the highlight of the week was getting to visit Pearl Harbor. It was a very sobering experience, matched only by my visit to Normandy years earlier, but it was an important reminder of the tragedies of war and the sacrifices of previous generations to help deliver us to where we are today.
