Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. Qingdao is not only our home but a gorgeous city on the Yellow Sea at the foot of multiple mountain ranges. It is a paradise for an outdoor enthusiast! The city has endless roads and pathways for both running and cycling. Today's video highlights both the natural and the human obstacles that we encountered on our cycle from sea level over one of the passes of Laoshan, one of our favorite local mountains. Most of the roads in Qingdao are constantly groomed and perfect for cycling, but the village approach to the peak is an exception; the city has been working on this 3-4 mile stretch for almost a year now. While some of it has been restored, you will see we encountered many rough surfaces for road bikes! And, the result was a split tire and a flat on two different bikes. But, it was still worth it! At least there is evidence of ongoing road construction and an attempt to restore the road surface which will help us out when we hit the 14-17% grades. Right now, it's hard to gain traction. This is one of our favorite rides as it takes us through the local villages and growing areas. Right now the China Berry trees are blooming and the cherries are bright red and ready to be eaten straight from the tree. Every street was lined with cherry baskets and locals trying to sell their freshly picked fruit. If only we had a way to carry cherries in our cycling jersey pockets!
