๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ These were probably the last few miles weโ€™d have to traverse across the ice before a storm set in. The ice was piling up as Sardinha 2 reached the last stretch of land. I heard heavy breathing behind me. Then another. Then dozens. A pod of 30 or 40 humpback whales was following us. They came so close I could have touched them. The water was green and milky. If I could see beneath the surface with a microscope, I would see the sea ice nourishing the ocean with minerals and phytoplanktonโ€”the foundation of all animal life in the Arctic. The sea ice that posed a danger to me was responsible for the flourishing of all species.
