Hello Friends, This is the long format episode that chronicles my 32 day, 2300 nm passage from Los Angeles to Honolulu onboard my 1965 Alberg 30 sailboat SV TRITEIA. 1000 miles from Hawaii my rudder failed due to striking a submerged object (that was painted red). After failed attempts to secure the control lines to the rudder due to large seas and high winds I was forced to steer with a small "Sea Squid" drogue for 18 days. Triteia is equipped with a vintage Sailomat Aux Rudder wind vane which helped a great deal but was far undersized compared to the large rudder attached to Triteia’s full keel. The Windvane started to fail internally soon after the rudder failure. I was able to make a makeshift tiller handle that allowed me to turn the boat to get it back on course but the self steering started popping out of gear and stopped working completely while I crossed the channel between Molokai and Oahu forcing me to sit on the transom and hand steer for the last 6 hours of this intense passage. If you would like to read the twice + daily blog posts I made during the crossing you can find those here: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/Triteia (update: Rudder Repaired May 2022 - https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLm0chdAnUTpx5URp-6Y36XOH8EhxXP5ZB ) MY SHORE TEAM! A much needed shout out to my amazing Shore Team for this passage! Some of you signed up by accidentally being related to me and the rest of you accidentally signed up because I love you, value your opinion and had your phone numbers. David Frederick: My big brother and Executive Director of US Cyber Command for the NSA. David kept me safe with twice daily ship reports, checking on my mental health and used his army training to advise me about operating under fatigue and high stress. Colby Thorp: My baby brother, a US marine and a padi certified search and rescue diver. Colby managed all of my accounts while I was away including the SOS email and secured a trailer for Triteia’s return trip. Thanks to his girlfriend Ashley for her help as well! Sarah Koenig: A singer / Songwriter and One of my closet friends for the last 18 years. Sarah was only a message away with any questions I had, Google searches daily and kept my spirits up sharing all of the nice comments on Instagram and YouTube. She also looked into general delivery to Hawaii and called ahead to the Harbor Master in Oahu to confirm details for me. Captain David Stovall: 200-Ton Masters Near Costal License Holder, Screen writer and a Texan so we are likely kinfolk. Stovall keep me updated with ships if I had questions while my brother was at work. He helped me work out the drogue steering and called BoatUS trying to get me a tow into port. Captain Noah Peffer: 50-Ton Masters Near Costal License Holder, Professor of Nautical Sciences, Artist and dear friend. I hold Noah’s opinion as gospel and he has saved my ass on the last two passages. He is the one I bug when I am terrified. I also want to thank my little brother Scott for checking on me, My oldest friend (since 3rd grade) Chance everything and My Buddy Dane for always being there. I can never repay you guys and I don’t know what I would have done without you all! Forever in your debt ! ---------------------------------- If you enjoy the channel please "Like" the videos and Subscribe so you don't miss any future episodes. Dave and Patrica get rescheduled to sail on the 1877 Tall Ship Elissa. They were able to get two of the limited number of ELISSA day sail spots on board as a sail training student. As a sail training student, participants will experience what life was like as a 19th-century sailor. The program includes both hands-on and lecture learning, focusing on setting sails and maneuvering the 144-year-old ship through the Gulf of Mexico. Come with us on this journey through the past and experience a piece of history. Galveston Historical Foundation brought ELISSA, an 1877 square-rigged iron barque, from a scrap yard in Piraeus Harbor, Greece to Galveston to begin restoration work in 1978. By 1982, GHF staff and volunteers completed restoration and transformed this rare, historic vessel into a floating museum that would actively sail. Today, ELISSA is one of only three ships of her kind in the world to still actively sail and welcomes over 40,000 visitors annually. She also serves as the Official Tall Ship of Texas, a National Historic Landmark and a symbol of the Gulf Coast’s historic beginnings as a sea port and active waterfront. https://www.galvestonhistory.org/ https://www.facebook.com/galvestonhistory/ Elissa was built in Aberdeen, Scotland as a merchant vessel in a time when steamships were overtaking sailing ships. She was launched on October 27, 1877. The vessel was named for the niece of Henry Fowler Watt, Elissa's first owner,[3] though according to his descendants the ship was named for the Queen of Carthage, Elissa (more commonly called Dido), Aeneas' tragic lover in the epic poem The Aeneid. Elissa also sailed under Norwegian and Swedish flags. In Norway she was known as the Fjeld of Tønsberg and her master was Captain Herman Andersen. In Sweden her name was Gustav of Gothenburg. In 1918, she was converted into a two-masted brigantine and an engine was installed. She was sold to Finland in 1930 (owned by Gustaf Erikson to 1942) and reconverted into a schooner. In 1959, she was sold to Greece, and successively sailed under the names Christophoros, in 1967 as Achaeos, and in 1969 as Pioneer. In 1970, she was rescued from destruction in Piraeus after being purchased for the San Francisco Maritime Museum. However, she languished in a salvage yard in Piraeus until she was purchased for $40,000, in 1975, by the Galveston Historical Foundation, her current owners.[4] In 1979, after a year in Greece having repairs done to her hull, Elissa was first towed to Gibraltar. There, she was prepared for an ocean tow by Captain Jim Currie of the New Orleans surveyors J.K. Tynan International. The restoration process continued until she was ready for tow on June 7, 1979. Elissa has an iron hull, and the pin rail and bright work is made of teak. Her masts are Douglas fir from Oregon, and her 19 sails were made in Maine. She has survived numerous modifications including installation of an engine, and the incremental removal of all her rigging and masts.

This week's episode brings us back to 2019 when we arrived at one of the most isolated islands in the world and spent time living with the people there. They are so far off the grid they live without any stores, restaurants or hospitals and without what many of us believe is now a fundamental right, access to the internet. It's hard to believe, but these people are so isolated most of them do not know what youtube, facebook or even what google is. The northern south pacific between Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands is one of the most remote regions in the entire world. Most of the people living on these remote islands spend their entire lives here and never leave the island they were born on. I really enjoyed making this episode, it's a positive story and if it resonates with you please share it. I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Subscribe and let's go off the beaten track together: https://bit.ly/2HPyDWB ************************************************************ For those of you who don't know me, my name is Chris. Four year ago I was running a financial sales business in Vancouver, Canda when I realized I was living someone else's life, going after someone else's dreams, and was absolutely miserable. So I sold the business, radically changed my life, and have never looked back. I've spent the last 3.5 years traveling the world on a sailboat with my young family where we've been fortunate to be able to go on adventures to remote places and connect with people from cultures far different from my own. This is the place I get to share those stories. This channel is more than just a sailing channel. It's about providing you with a lens into parts of the world, people, and histories that are not often seen or heard. There are many ways to live life on this planet and I've been fortunate to experience a few radically different ones. My hope is that by watching my videos you learn something about the outside world, or about yourself that challenges your perspective and perhaps shifts it in a way that brings maybe just a little more peace and happiness to your life. Much love to you all.
