► This new catamaran, which we were able to discover in Saint-Raphaël a week before its official presentation, marks a clear shift in terms of architectural choices. ► First comes the flybridge with helm station: until now, this configuration started with the Samana 59, while the smaller FP models made do with a twin helm/maneuvering station offset to starboard. Then there are the solid foredeck and forward door. No more trampolines! The FP55 thus aims to satisfy both the charter and Owner markets, with the emphasis placed more on comfort than performance. ► Barely had the Cannes Yachting Festival ended when we caught up with the Aquila 45 Sport in Saint-Raphaël for a first run. ► With just 2 to 6 knots of wind and a slight underlying swell, conditions were ideal for pushing this new powercat without getting shaken around too much… although its ability to handle the sea (and wakes) quickly impressed us. With sharper, more angular lines than other Aquila models, the 45 Sport does more than just look the part: it provides a remarkable feeling of safety, even at high speed. ► With twin 600 hp Mercury engines on the transom, we recorded a top speed of 45.6 knots. On board, the layout remains very much focused on conviviality, with a table surrounded by a U-shaped bench seat and two fold-down bulwarks that generously widen the cockpit at anchor. ► The practical details are particularly well thought out: handrails and lockers are everywhere, while the padded inner faces of the bulwarks prove very comfortable when the powercat starts moving around. Even the optional black headliner makes perfect sense here by reducing reflections. ► Presented as a world premiere in Cannes, the Aquila 35 Sport didn’t keep us waiting long before handing over the controls. A few days after the show, we caught up with it in Saint-Raphaël. ► Our test boat was equipped with twin 300 hp Mercury Verado V8s, with which we recorded a top speed of 36.4 knots. Already more than enough for plenty of fun, especially considering that twin 400 hp V10s are available as an option. ► At the helm, the four seats with flip-up bolsters and a proper footrest provide a very convincing driving position, while the robust handrails found throughout the boat are a reminder that this 35 is designed to go fast. The same goes for the small padded bolster running along the bulwarks: a particularly welcome detail as soon as the sea starts to build. ► But it is still aft that the Aquila 35 Sport reveals one of its cleverest features: the large bench seat can slide to port or starboard to provide easier access on either side. Two tables, a generous galley unit and the large forward bench seat complete a particularly sociable deck layout for a powercat measuring just 35'6" (10.82 m). ► And it still has another surprise below deck. Access to the cabin is on the starboard side; the steps normally providing access to the side deck retract into the console to clear the passage. With 6'4" (1.92 m) of headroom, a large bed and a particularly high-quality finish, right down to the small wood paneling lining the back of the cabin, the 35 makes it easy to extend your outing over several days. ► With the 35 and 45 Sport now in the water, Aquila has no intention of stopping there: a third model of around 40 feet is already in development.
