San Cristobal and Española are two of the first islands you visit when sailing to Galapagos. They introduce the sailor to a truly unique natural environment of our planet, that is incredibly rich in biodiversity and has abundant nutrients in its cold waters fed by the Antarctic Humboldt current. The Humboldt current reaches the Equator without warming up, carrying huge concentrations of plankton that in turn attracts lots of fish and marine mammals that feed in its waters. The underwater biodiversity in turn attracted many marine birds as well as land species, that evolved at a fast pace in each of the major islands, creating an outstanding living lab of evolution. When Darwin visited Galapagos in September 1835 to collect specimens and make observations he noted that certain species while being similar were slightly different from island to island and perfectly adapted to each. This was the starting point of his theory of evolution, which he published 14 years later in his landmark book The Origin of Species which sold out in a matter of days and gave him enduring fame. @sailingkasada spends Thanksgiving in Miami aboard their 1996 Fountaine Pajot Athena 38 Catamaran Sailboat. We jump on a mooring ball at Dinner Key Marina. We use public transportation for the first time to explore Miami and spend some time at Lot 11 Skatepark downtown. We also meet some friendly boaters who invite us to their bonfire. We continue to explore the local area as well. And are pleasantly surprised to find out there are firework shows over Miami quite often.

We ended up unexpectedly in the harbor of Cabo de Palos, at the southeast of Spain. And it turned out to be a lovely harbor at the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. So we made this movie with our drone about the marina.

Our 30 year old upholstery looked fine, but... well, it was 30 year old boat upholstery. You can't SEE smells in the video, and you should be thankful forthat! This video is an overview of the process we followed as we recovered our saloon upholstery with brand new Sunbrella marine canvas. It's not a tutorial, and there's two reasons for that. The first reason is that neither of us are an expert at sewing or upholstery. So if you haven't already figured this out, our disclaimer is that this video shows what WE did to reuphoslter Intention. If you did things differently for your boat, we'd love to hear about it. Chances are that YOU know what you are doing and we just made it up as we went along. The second reason is that there will be several more detailed videos that show each of the steps we cover in this video in a lot more detail. If there's a step that interests you, check them out. or if you're bored and you like hearing our voice, then check them ALL out!! This project was a lot of fun, honestly. And although it might sound like we were sponsored by Sunbrella, we were DEFINITELY not. We spent between 12 and 16 hours taking off the old fabric, sewing new covers, and stapling them on. We spent approximately $500 (Canadian) on the Sunbrella, Velcro, Phifertex (for the seat back cushion backing), zipper chain and pulls, and other notions and sundries. That amount doesn't include the costs of any new tools that we bought to make our lives easier. We didn't even bother getting quotes on how much it would cost to have a professional reupholster these cushions, but we'd be willing to bet that it would be much more than that. The final product is something that we are INCREDIBLY proud of, and we think we saved a lot of money in the process. Here we look at the underside of a Bavaria 40 sailboat in downtown Vancouver, Canada. Bavaria yachts are famous for their elegance and style, and the underwater parts are no exception! The sleek lines of the hull make this boat an efficient long-distance cruiser, with the long fin keel and spade rudder working to provide a perfect counter to the large sail plan above water. Sitting in False Creek over the winter, this particular vessel is in need of a hull cleaning but is otherwise in great health. Every waterway seems to have a different blend of sea life which flourishes on the local boats. In the case of False Creek Vancouver, we commonly see the algae featured in this video. It probably has a fancy scientific name but for obvious reasons we call it False Creek Floss. Although it comes off a boat with very little effort, this stuff very quickly grows like a thick beard over every underwater surface.
