From our glimpse from the dock, the 43 features a rig that is stepped further forward than on the 42, and it has an overlapping jib. The design shows a slender, sloping coachroof base that refines the superstructure. At the stern, the bulwark is cut out to ensure direct access to the quay when the catamaran is moored alongside. On deck, the 43 gains a forward cockpit compared to the 42. The helm station remains raised on the port side but is now accompanied by a U-shaped bench seat rather than a simple sunlounger. Inside, the builder has designed an ingenious modular table that can straddle the nacelle and cockpit while providing seating for 12. A large opening hatch is installed in the forward face of the nacelle, not unlike the one on the very first Bali, the 4.5. The forward volume of the hulls has been optimized to increase sleeping capacity - in the Owner’s version, the bed is installed forward and there is a proper desk, like you would have at home. The 4-cabin version offers all equivalent volumes. The Dehler Optima 98 A, built in 1979, is a sturdy and well-maintained 9.80-meter sailboat. It is equipped with a battened mainsail from 2010 and a furling genoa from 2012, supported by a Harken furler. Other sails include a light wind sail that has seen little use and an unused orange storm jib. The boat is powered by a reliable Nanni Diesel 3.2 engine (21 HP), installed in 2014 with Saildrive and a three-blade propeller, totaling 1160 hours of operation. The engine is complemented by a 60-liter diesel tank, filters for fuel and water, and hydraulic steering for ease of handling. For navigation, the Dehler Optima 98 A is equipped with modern electronics, including a Raymarine ES75 chart plotter and a Raymarine ECU 200 autopilot installed in 2021. It also features active AIS, a Lowrance Link5 VHF radio (2016), a Nasa sounder, a log, and wind instruments from VDO. The boat's onboard comforts include a 170-liter water tank, pressure water system with filters, and a well-equipped galley featuring a two-burner gas cooker with oven, a double stainless-steel sink, and a 40-liter compressor-cooled box. The cockpit is protected by a sprayhood and tent (both replaced in 2020), with additional shade provided by a new bimini installed in 2023. The boat has been carefully upgraded and maintained over the years. The rigging was replaced in 2015, and the deck features TBS anti-slip covering added in 2019. The Lofrans anchor windlass (2020) allows for easy anchoring with a Rocna anchor and 40 meters of chain, all controllable from the cockpit. The electrical system has been modernized with 220V power (added in 2014), a 25-amp charger, LED navigation lights, and a solar panel with MPPT controller. With a pair of 100AH batteries (new in 2023), a 95AH starter battery, and a Planar diesel heater (2018), the Dehler Optima 98 A is fully equipped for comfortable cruising in various conditions. It has the tall rig, 2-spreader mast, great sails, new standing rigging, new chainplates, barrier coated hull, CPT Autopilot, Monitor Windvane, Tigres windlass, and a Yanmar 4JH4-TE diesel engine with 700 hours. A UNIQUE FACT: Our Westsail is hull #100. While it is undeniably a boat built in 1978, which makes it 46 years old, the boat has seen drastically less use than its age would suggest. For 30 years the boat was stored, unfinished, in California. The sails and original rigging was stored indoors during this period. This is why the sails, while original, are in such great shape. Essentially, the boat has really only been used for about 15 years of its overall life. It's a bit like when someone finds an old classic car that's been stored in a barn for 30 years. In this way, our boat shows far less wear and tear than you'd expect for a boat of this age. LOCATION: She's currently on the hard in St Mary's, GA in one of the only DIY marinas left on the East coast. It's a great place to keep a boat, especially if you prefer to do your own work, like we do. It is OK if you spend the night on the boat in this work yard. It's already set up with an air conditioner so things stay cool and dehumidified while at the boat. SAILING CHARACTERISTICS: Contrary to mis-guided belief, the Westsail 42 is quite fast, regularly sailing at speeds over 8 knots sustained. She tends to sail at about half the windspeed and does surprisingly well even in lighter winds. She will point at angles closer than 45 degrees to the wind, but does begin to slip rapidly if pressed to sail much closer than that. She's a HEAVY displacement, full-keel sailboat that's fast, capable, safe, stable, and very comfortable in the ocean. We've made countless upgrades to the boat to enhance her safety, longevity, seaworthiness, and comfort. - Completely eliminating the hull-deck joint was a punishingly difficult modification, but now the boat benefits from being 100% leak-proof along the hull-deck joint which plagues many boats of this design. - The brand new standing rigging, chainplates and related hardware was a $20,000 upgrade - and now the boat is ready to take on extended sailing passages with confidence. - The re-balanced, re-geared Maxprop gives the boat an hourly fuel-burn rate of only 3/4 GPH at 2200RPM, pushing the boat at 6.5 knots. This is a very efficient fuel burn rate for a boat that weighs nearly 40,000lbs, with most burning well over 1GPH in this size and weight range. - She's equipped with 720W solar and 300ah LiFePO4. 2000w Xantrex inverter/charger. Victron charger controller for solar - Victron DCDC charger for the house bank. Well oversized wiring and connectors and appropriately fused throughout. Balmar 100a alternator provides charge while engine is running via the DCDC charger. - 30 gallon-per-hour Rainman watermaker. Fresh impeller. Meticulously maintained. Works wonderfully. The boat has an aft-cabin air conditioner that uses about 14amps and will run completely through the night if you wish for it to. All mattresses are new with 6" thick, memory foam for a very comfortable night's sleep. There are 2 composting heads, which eliminate the need for pump outs, and allows you to avoid inevitable leaks, smells, and issues with marine heads and holding tanks. There's so much more that I could talk about, but rather than ramble on about it, please just let me know any particular questions I can answer. It's an incredible boat for an incredible price. We're asking $80,000 | Cash sale, no owner financing. The other Westsail 42s on the market are either... 1) In much worse shape and asking the same general price as we are. 2) Double the cost of our's - and honestly not all that much better.
