Today, freshly graduated with a 200 GT Master’s certificate obtained in Belgium and Marseille, he operates - and enjoys - his Excess 11. ► “I wanted to buy a second-hand sailboat. My wife told me: ‘I’m warning you, if you don’t buy a catamaran, I’m not coming aboard.’ So, a multihull it would be… Eventually I came across Excess 11 #151, one of the last models equipped with the self-tacking jib, which was due to be displayed at the 2023 Grand Pavois boat show. It was a three-cabin version whose layout suited me perfectly. I asked Christopher, the dealer, whether the catamaran was available for sale. The answer was yes, so I bought it and was quickly able to secure the marina berth I had already applied for a few years earlier. Today, I operate the catamaran and have built a relationship with the brand’s management team, first as a contributing owner and then as a brand ambassador. One day - I’m not really sure why - I asked Thibaut (de Montvalon, Excess Managing Director, editor’s note) whether anyone had ever completed a solo Atlantic crossing aboard an Excess 11. Navigation am Segelboot auf Langfahrt: Plotter, iPad, Handy, Papierkarten — wie das zusammenspielt. Ein Freund fragte mich, ob er einen zweiten Plotter braucht. Meine Antwort hat ihn überrascht. Ich hab auf der La Licorne kein teures Cockpit-Setup — und trotzdem navigiere ich zuverlässig auf Langfahrt. Mein Raymarine C120 ist aus den 90ern, kein NMEA, alte Karten. Aber er macht Radar und er funktioniert immer. Das eigentliche Herzstück ist ein uraltes gebrauchtes iPad der sechsten Generation mit Navionics und AIS überlagert. Diese Kombination — aktuelle Seekarte plus AIS — ist für mich auf See das Entscheidende. Dazu kommt mein Handy mit Navily, Windy, Ankeralarm und dem elektronischen Logbuch. Und Papierkarten, die ich manchmal fast vergesse, obwohl sie vorgeschrieben sind und besonders an der Atlantikküste oder im Englischen Kanal wirklich gerettet haben. Ganz am Ende gibt es noch einen Tipp, den ich fast vergessen hätte: wie du deine gesamte Navigation mit einem Backofen vor Blitzeinschlag schützt. ZARKAVA and VALYRA are two extraordinary 27 metre Hodgdon superyachts, both built in carbon fibre, both powered by triple MAN V12 engines and Kamewa waterjets, and both created with one very clear purpose: to go incredibly fast while remaining unusually quiet and comfortable on board. Commissioned by His Highness the Aga Khan, these yachts reflect a very particular vision of yachting.
