Built in 1959 in Japan and shipped to Cape Cod, USA, to be fitted out, these diminutive boats have big hearts and can go just about anywhere. All wood with fiberglass over plywood decks, a new one could be purchased, complete with sails, for less than $10,000 back in the day. Wabi Sabi, this Samurai 28, is mostly original with only slight modifications - and while she's not for sale, I thought it would be worth showing you all this beautiful boat. The owner, Gordon, bought her in 2004 and has been sailing along the Maine coast ever since. He did not spend a lot of money on her, as you'll learn, and it just goes to show you that there are so many different ways to get out on the water - even on 64 year old wooden sloop - and you do not have to spend a fortune to do so. Because we are planning to go back to the Netherlands, we are selling our Dean 365 cat. The last 5 years we lived, sailed, ate, worked and slept full-time on our boat in the Med, and refitted and upgraded it. It's a great liveaboard boat. And off-grid. The only thing we miss, is a vegetable garden on the foredeck :-) But there are big solar panels with their electrics, 560Ah LiFePO4 house batteries, 3000W inverter, full size washing machine, a 12V watermaker that runs on solar, large kitchen, kingsize bed, etc. The boat has been built with thick GRP and double the rigging of most cats, and it doesn't make creaking & cracking sounds at full sea, like many modern boats. Juni 2023: Am 6.6. 23 DI segeln wir von Lefkas nach Meganisi in die Abelaki Bucht. Wir warten dort 2 Tage auf unseren neu bestellten Rocna Anker. 8.6.23. DO Um 11:00 Uhr ruft uns Georg an, dass unser Anker da ist. Wir fahren nach Nidri an den Stadtkai und legen mit dem Bug nach vorne an. Carlo holt den Anker und baut ihn mit einem Monteur an unseren Bug. Nachdem gerade ein Platz am Stadtkai frei war, legen wir dort an und verbrachten einen gemütlichen Abend in Nidri. 9.6.23. FR: 07:50 Uhr gestartet. Um 12:30 Uhr machen wir einen Badestopp im Pera Pighadi. Um 14:30 Uhr Anker auf und mit Raum Wind Kurs Richtung Poros. Wir hatten Glück und ergatterten einen Platz am Schwimmsteg in Poros. Wir aßen, wie immer unsere Lammchops im Restaurante Kukomo. Wir testeten dann auch endlich mal - bei wundervollem Licht - die Remetzo Bar in Poros. 10.6.23. SA Nach dem Einkaufen sind wir direkt rüber zum Strand und badeten dort. Erst um 12:30 Uhr machten wir uns mit Amwind Kurs direkt auf in Ag Nikolaus Bucht. Um 16:00 Uhr haben wir bei Costa an der Boje festgemacht. Um 18:00 Uhr kamen spontan Bekannte aus Deutschland, die zufällig in Zakynthos Urlaub machten. Mit Ihnen gingen wir zu Costa lecker Fisch essen tranken noch gemeinsam einen Ouzo auf unserem Schiff. 11.6.23. SO Um 08:23 Uhr fuhren wir in die Ship Wrack Bay und haben dort Fotos gemacht. 10:23 Uhr segelten wir fast komplett Richtung Süden. Bei 17 bis 20, später 30 Knoten Wind kamen wir gut voran. Um 16:30 Uhr fiel der Anker in der Keri Bucht im "Meeres Nationalpark Zakynthos". Beim Einfahren in die Bucht haben wir eine Schildkröte gesehen, leider nur ganz kurz. 12.6.23. MO Wir blieben bis 12:00 Uhr in dieser schönen Bucht und segelten dann Amwind beharrlich Richtung Zakynthos Stadt. Wir bekamen glücklicherweise einen Platz und schlenderten gemütlich durch die Straßen der Inselhauptstadt. 13.6.23. DI Gemütlich sind wir von Zakynthos nach Poros Amwind zurück gesegelt. Diesmal haben wir in der Ankerbucht geankert und uns selbst Lammchops in der Pfanne zubereitet. 14.6.23. MI Um 10:00 Uhr Anker auf mit Raumwind gemütlich den Kanal zwischen Kefalonia und Ithaka gesegelt. Eigentlich wollten wir nach Fiskardo, sahen aber im Vorbeifahren eine schöne Bucht "Polis" auf Ithaka. Wir ankern in der Mitte der Bucht vor dem Strand. Das Wasser war türkis. Leider kam eine Flottille und es wurde eng. Weil es regnete, blieben wir noch dort einen weiteren Tag. 16.6.23 FR Um kurz nach 10 verließen wir die Bucht in Polis und segelten nach Syvota. An den Steg von der Taverne Stavros. Auch da liegen wir wegen Wind 2 Nächte und aßen lecker in seinem Restaurant. 18.6. 23. SO Um 09:00 Uhr wurden wir von Stavros mit dem Dingi aus unserer Lücke gezogen. Wir fuhren direkt in die Nachtbarbucht und badeten dort bis 14 Uhr. Von dort kreuzten wir Amwind nach Meganisi zur Taverne Spilia. Dort trafen wir den Verkäufer unseres Schiffes. Mit seiner Familie und Freunden. Und wir hatten einen lustigen Abend gemeinsam verbracht. 19.6. 23. MO Vormittag gingen wir noch zur Stadt hoch und hat dann einen tollen Ausblick. Um 13:00 Uhr legten wir erst ab. Und fuhren an den Steg von Conny. Es gab noch viel zu tun, bevor wir am nächsten Tag nach Hause fliegen konnten. Gesamt 180 Seemeilen davon 101 gesegelt. Every sailor hates fog. Even with modern electronics, it’s still a disorienting experience. Should GPS fail, it can be a source of major anxiety. It doesn’t have to be like that, however, and in this video I describe a couple of incidents in the days of innocence before modern aids. The second is a sure-fire way of defusing what has traditionally been a truly nasty situation. I don’t cover keeping an extra lookout, hoisting radar reflectors and the rest of the pure seamanship. Something about this sailboat really struck me and I wanted to go see her for myself. She's a classic Chuck Paine design and was built in the UK and while just 30 feet overall, she feels like a much larger sailboat. Only 50 VICTORIA boats were made. However, her build year is a little murky as some sources say the VICTORIA wasn't built until 1986; other sources say she was designed in 1979 and first built in 1982... Go figure. She does have a sister ship, the Chuck Paine designed/Morris built, LEIGH. They are nearly identical. Only 19 of these were built (in Maine, as Morris Yachts). This VICTORIA has completed THREE trans-Atlantic crossings so to say she is seaworthy is an understatement. She can go anywhere. Anyway, the seller/owner agreed to have me down to take a first-hand look. Having never been on a VICTORIA or a LEIGH, I was truly excited and she exceeded my expectations. The build quality was evident everywhere I looked. However, I did find two trouble spots both on the starboard topside - worthy of a qualified surveyor's attention. But not deal-breakers, IMO. The boat was listed as "fair" - and I would agree with the assessment but there is a lot to like and at $18,500 and with a little investment of time, DIY efforts, and likely a little money, you'd have yourself a boat worth twice that amount. These are highly regarded, hard to find boats. There are only two other active listings I could find, one in the UK and one in the US, one listed in the high $20ks and the other in the high $30ks. This VICTORIA would be an ideal coastal and blue water cruiser - for a couple or a small family. She's also ideal for solo sailing and the seller/owner often did just that.
