She sports reverse bows, foam core hulls, decks and furniture and is carbon reinforced in higher stress areas, for rigidity and sailing performance. There is an option for dagger-boards or high performance fixed keels. She has a powerful 133 m2/1,432 square foot sail-plan, to get going early sailing in light winds and is built to handle stronger conditions well once you have shortened sail. This is a quick interior and exterior tour of our 2012 Beneteau Oceanis 48. It has a length overall (LOA) of 14.6 m or 47’11” and a beam of 4.74 m or 15’7”. Ours has the shoal draft keel which draws 1.96 m or 6'5". Displacement with the shoal draft keel and roller furling mainsail is 13,104 kg or 28,889 lb. The Beneteau Oceanis 48 can be configured with 2, 3, 4 or even 5 cabins. Our 48 is configured with three cabins, two heads and positions the galley to port. One cool feature unique to the 48 over the 45 is the master head and shower configuration. They are separate with the head compartment to port, the shower to starboard and the sink on the centreline. This means someone showering isn't occupying the head at the same time. Our Oceanis 48 is powered by a 75 HP Yanmar 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine muted to an SD 50 sail drive. We have sailed her at close to 10 knots in about 20 knots of wind.

Join us this week for a detailed tour of our 1989 built Gib'Sea 402. She is a 12.4m (40ft 8inch) masthead sloop sailing yacht, with a 3.8m (12ft 5inch) beam, and a 2.0m (6ft 6inch) draft. We have fitted her out so that we can live self-sufficiently for as long as possible occasionally needing to visit a marina to top up with water, fuel and food! As long as its sunny we generate all our own power, with 700W of solar panels, and 7,200Wh of LiFePO4 lithium batteries. We use a 3,000W inverter on board, which enables us to remove gas from our boat - all cooking is electrical. We also have a 2,200W generator as backup for the cloudy days. Kate was a junior sailor in Opti's and 420's while Curtis went cruising in the Great Lakes with his family. We met while sailing in a Melges 24 regatta and have been sailing together ever since. The first time we went cruising together as a couple was on a friends borrowed J Boats J 105 in the North Channel of Lake Huron and Canada (part of the Great Loop). Those few weeks, and watching other channels like Gone With the Wynns, Sailing Uma, Project Atticus, Delos, Nahoa, and Sailing La Vagabonde, convinced us that the sailing life was for us. We bought our boat, a J Boats J/46, in 2019 after spending years searching for the perfect bluewater sailboat to sail around the world. We were interested in a catamaran and monohulls, but loved the performance cruising design of the J(it is faster than most cruising catamarans). We spent six months refitting her in Rhode Island, before selling our house and cars, quitting our jobs, and leaving land life for good to become digital nomads, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn. We have since navigated over 12,000 miles together, through storms, big waves, pandemics, and lockdowns. We sailed to Maine, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Grenada, Sint Maarten, the Azores, Canary Islands, and Brazil, on our way south to Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile to sail around Cape Horn and into the Patagonia fjords. We never intended to become influencers or start a new YouTube sailing channel, but now it is what we do. We love sharing our experience and adventures with you. We have learned to fly the drone and edit videos, trying to produce relaxing and listenable videos for you to sail away and watch at home while having coffee on Sunday mornings. We hope we can inspire you to achieve your life goals and cross off those bucket list items also!

Sorry there is no episode this week as Judy and I have been away. My father unfortunately passed away so I spent last week in Northern Germany. The episodes will continue next week, but for this week we have another in our series of boat reviews from Annapolis. I have to admit I am slightly upset by the way Oyster are going with their boats. It wasn't until we were onboard that I found out they have now switched their whole range to a twin ruddered configuration. I suppose the fact Oyster have always been synonymous with top end luxury boats means they would be tempted to follow the lead of other brands who are going all out to maximise interior space and produce a boat that values having settees next to the king sized bed in the aft cabin above actual sailing ability! As you might guess, I gave the salesman a bit of a hard time!
