On most boats it is important to have the head of the mainsail as close to the top of the mast as possible. Furthermore it must also be quick to attach and disconnect the main halyard, even with cold and wet fingers. So a shackle or a bowline are not the best solutions. The best is the method is the one shown in this video. The bobble is nice, but not strictly necessary. A double figure of 8 knot (figure of 16?) will do. The bobble or knot is never removed so you cannot lose the halyard through the mast. I usually shorten the main halyard a few cm/in at the start of each season to move the wear spots.

This squall blew through The Bight at Norman Island in the British Virgin Islands just as boats.com editorial director John Burnham and crew were approaching a mooring. In the downpour and strong winds, they missed the mooring on the first try, which is what's happening during this sequence. To read more about one family's adventures in the islands, read "Paradise Revisited: Back in the BVI" - http://features.boats.com/boat-content/2015/03/paradise-revisited-back-in-the-bvi/ For more boating videos, visit http://www.boats.com. boats.com features boat reviews, how-to videos, special features, and information about new boats, boats for sale, and boating products—usually with a dash of fun. Our reviewers test the features, performance, and specifications of each boat, searching out the hidden details for a critical evaluation. If you're shopping for a boat, we want to help you make the best choice. And if you're just looking, we'll try to make it fun too. Subscribe to receive notification of new videos.
