And it was another one of those bad news days. After pulling up the deck on the outside we realised that the wood rot got into the samson post right on deck level. After poking a knife into the samson post to determine how far along the wood rot has gone (hoping we could safe the samson post) we quickly realised that it's rotten almost halfway through and it was a hard decision, I do have to admit it took a bit of convincing, I really wanted to save the old post, I really didn't want another project, it's all getting a bit overwhelming lately, like what the hell was I thinking, buying a timber boat... But yeah the boat builder and a few other friends did talk some sense into me, it is probably not the safest idea to moor your boat on a half rotten post. The ride out of the Narrows of Strangford Lough to the Irish Sea always makes me simile. Racing out with wind against tide can make for some serious lump at the bar mouth so the crew always has to be ready to react as the boat bounced up and over the waves. The lump as not as bad as expect during the exit of the 2022 South Rock Race, the J109 Going to Red had its first offshore hit out against Hindsight and came through with flying colours. The boys were hitting 9 knots with a strong push of outgoing tide as the raced toward the Bar Buoy before taking the left turn to head up the coast to the South Rock. The team on redline racing harding skipped a beat as they bounced off the top of a couple of short share waves. The trip back in should be a lot flatter as wind and tide will be heading in the same direction. As always the South Rock race was a load of fun, there is nothing like getting out for an offshore bash.
