Wir verlassen Funchal nach einer wunderschönen Tour nach Monte, wo wir durch tropischen Regenwald spazieren und die Carreiros mit ihren Korbschlitten bewundern. Zurück beim Ankerplatz hat sich eine hohe Wellen umgebaut. Daher flüchten wir nach Caniçal. Auf dem Weg erwischt uns der Kapeffekt mit voller Wucht! Hohe Wellen und auf einen Schlag viel Wind! Kommen wir da unbeschadet raus? We leave Funchal after a wonderful trip to Monte, where we stroll through the tropical rainforest and admire the Carreiros with their wicker sledge-like vehicles. Back at the anchorage, high waves have built up. So we take refuge in Caniçal. On the way, the cape effect hits us with full force! High waves and a sudden gust of wind! Wir ankern vor der traumhaften Küste Madeiras und freuen uns darauf, die Insel zu erkunden. Spektakuläre Levada-Wanderungen durch die einzigartige Natur warten auf uns. Auch ein Besuch des Walmuseums steht auf dem Programm. Doch dann - ein falscher Schritt und der Fuß ist verletzt! We’re moored off the stunning coast of Madeira and are looking forward to exploring the island. Spectacular levada walks through the island’s unique natural landscape await us. A visit to the Whale Museum is also on the agenda. But then – one wrong step and my foot is injured!

Hoch die Segel - fertig - los! Weiter geht´s nach Madeira, auf unserem Weg immer weiter nach Westen. Am Ankerplatz tauscht Dirk die Propelleranoden - unter Wasser! Das klappt richtig gut! Madeira ist ein Wanderparadies. Vom Ankerplatz in Machico starten wir auch gleich auf unsere erste Levada-Wanderung. Kommt mit, es gibt viel zu entdecken. Hoist the sails – ready – go! Onwards to Madeira, continuing ever further west. At the anchorage, Dirk replaces the propeller anodes – underwater! It’s going really well! Madeira is a hiker’s paradise. From the anchorage in Machico, we set off straight away on our first levada walk. Come along – there’s plenty to discover.

Nach drei Tagen erreichen wir unser Ziel, die kleine Insel Porto Santo mit ihrem ewig langen, feinen Sandstrand. Kommt mit zu unseren Touren quer über die Insel durch eine atemberaubende Natur. Aber Porto Santo hat gleich noch zwei Überraschungen für uns parat. Seid gespannt. After three days, we reach our destination: the small island of Porto Santo with its seemingly endless beach of fine sand. Unsere Zeit an der Algarve neigt sich dem Ende. Bevor wir lossegeln, gibt es aber noch einiges zu erledigen und der Spaß kommt auch nicht zu kurz. Dann heißt es Abschied nehmen, von all den lieben Freunden und Bekannten hier, von der gewohnten Umgebung, hinein in ein neues Abenteuer. Auf geht´s nach Porto Santo, der Nachbarinsel von Madeira. Our time in the Algarve is coming to an end. Before we set sail, however, there’s still plenty to do – and there’s no shortage of fun either. Then it’s time to say goodbye to all our dear friends and acquaintances here, and to the familiar surroundings, as we set off on a new adventure. Off we go to Porto Santo, Madeira’s neighbouring island.

Schweren Herzens canceln wir den Plan, noch in diesem Frühjahr in die Karibik zu segeln. nun peilen wir November an und freuen uns darauf, bis dahin Madeira mit Porto Santo, die Kanaren und die Kapverden ausgiebig zu erkunden. WIr bekommen jede Menge Besuch, denn plötzlich machen allle Freunde auf einmal Urlaub an der Algarve und besuchen uns. It is with a heavy heart that we are cancelling our plans to sail to the Caribbean this spring. We are now aiming for November and are looking forward to exploring Madeira and Porto Santo, the Canary Islands and Cape Verde in depth in the meantime. We’re having loads of visitors, as all our friends have suddenly decided to holiday in the Algarve and come and see us.

Suria liegt immer noch an der Algarve vor Anker. Wir zählen die Stürme schon gar nicht mehr. An den wenigen schönen Tagen segeln wir raus aufs Meer, um den Wassermacher laufen zu lassen oder machen Ausflüge. Heidi und Robert nehmen mich mit an die rauhe Westküste und Dirk und ich besuchen mit der Bahn Saskia und ihr flauschiges Crewmitglied Rüdi in Lagos. Dort lernen wir Sven kennen, der auf der Werft einen massiven Ruderschaden reparieren lässt. Iberische Orcas hatten ihm an der Westküste Portugals das Ruder mitsamt der Steuersäule stark beschädigt. Gruselig! Aber seht selbst. Suria is still moored off the Algarve. We’ve lost count of the storms by now. On the few fine days, we sail out to sea to run the watermaker or go on excursions. Heidi and Robert take me to the rugged west coast, whilst Dirk and I take the train to visit Saskia and her fluffy crew member Rüdi in Lagos. There we meet Sven, who is having a massive rudder damage repaired at the shipyard. Iberian orcas had severely damaged his rudder and steering column off the west coast of Portugal. Spooky! But see for yourselves.

Das Jahr beginnt turbulent. Ein Sturm jagd den nächsten, nachts müssen wir Ankerwache gehen und tagsüber kommen wir kaum von Bord. Durch die Überschwemmungen mussten die Staudämme abgelassen werden, was zu massiven Strömungen und jeder Menge Treibgut führt. Das wird für uns eines Nachts zu einem echten Problem ... The year gets off to a turbulent start. One storm follows another; at night we have to keep watch at anchor, and during the day we can hardly get off the boat. Due to the flooding, the dams had to be drained, resulting in strong currents and plenty of flotsam. One night, this turns into a real problem for us...

Bom dia von der Werft in Portimao. Eigentlich wollten wir ja nur zwei Wochen bleiben, aber es kommen jeden Tag neue Baustellen hinzu. Bevor es wieder ins Wasser geht, lässt Dirk unsere Drohne nochmal in die Luft. DJI hat sie tatsächlich ersetzt, nachdem sie auf der griechischen Insel Kithnos aufrund eines Softwarefehlers eine Notlandung auf dem Wasser machte und versank. Am Vormittag des 24.12.2025 werden wir wieder ins Wasser gekrant. Als wir die Motoren starten, riecht es plötzlich aus dem Motorraum des Backbordmotors stark verschmort! Oje, was ist da los?

Bom dia von Bord der Suria, nach fast genau drei Jahren gehen wir zum ersten Mal wieder aus dem Wasser. Wir wollen vor der Atlantiküberquerung die Borddurchlässe auf Trudesign umrüsten. Einfacher und günstiger als hier wird es in Zukunft nicht mehr. Beim Hochdruckreinigen kommen viele kleine Löcher im Coppercoat zum Vorschein. Vasile, der Chef von Slick Hull, sagt gleich, dass dies ein Garantiefall ist und wir das Coppercoat komplett neu bekommen. Ein Mann - ein Wort! Wir nutzen die Werftzeit und stürzen uns sofort in die Arbeit. Aber mehr dazu im Video. Good morning from aboard the Suria; after almost exactly three years, we’re coming out of the water for the first time. Before crossing the Atlantic, we want to convert the through-hull fittings to Trudesign. It won’t get any easier or cheaper than this in future. High-pressure washing reveals lots of tiny holes in the Coppercoat. Vasile, the boss of Slick Hull, says straight away that this is a warranty claim and we’ll get the Coppercoat completely redone. A man of his word! We’re making the most of our time in the shipyard and getting straight down to work. But more on that in the video.

Es ist Ende Oktober und eine Hitzewelle hat Südeuropa fest im Griff. Von Almerimar segeln wir einen Tag und eine Nacht bis nach Gibraltar, wo wir bei La Linea ankern. Der Wind dreht und wir kreuzen auf die andere Seite der Bucht. In Palmones nutzen wir den kurzen Weg zum Gewerbegebiet, um Vorräte zu bunkern. Noch einmal günstig tanken und weiter geht's, wieder mit einer Nachtfahrt nach Portimão an der Felsalgarve. It is the end of October and a heatwave has southern Europe firmly in its grip. We sail from Almerimar for a day and a night to Gibraltar, where we anchor at La Linea. The wind changes direction and we tack to the other side of the bay. In Palmones, we take advantage of the short distance to the industrial estate to stock up on supplies. We fill up with fuel at a good price once again and continue on our way, sailing through the night to Portimão on the rocky Algarve coast.

Diesmal segeln wir mal wieder größere Strecken, immer weiter nach Westen. Als erstes geht es von Sizilien rund 200 Seemeilen nach Sardinien und von dort knapp 550 Seemeilen nach Almerimar am spanischen Festland. Dabei geht einiges kaputt und ein Containerschiff nähert sich auf Kollisionskurs. Geht das gut? This time we are sailing longer distances again, further and further west. First, we sail around 200 nautical miles from Sicily to Sardinia and from there just about 550 nautical miles to Almerimar on the Spanish mainland. Some things break along the way and a container ship approaches on a collision course. Will everything turn out alright?

Mit Rauschefahrt segeln wir von Malta mit Ankerstopps auf Favignana und am Kap San Vito nach Arenella bei Palermo, wo wir vor zwei Jahren schon mal geankert hatten. Diesmal wollen hoch zum Monte Pellegrino, dem 600 m hohen Hausberg von Palermo. Kommt mit auf eine abenteerliche Wanderung mit traumhafter Aussicht. We sail from Malta at full speed, stopping to drop anchor at Favignana and Cape San Vito, before arriving at Arenella near Palermo, where we anchored two years ago. This time, we want to climb Monte Pellegrino, Palermo's 600-metre-high local mountain. Come with us on an adventurous hike with fantastic views.

Von Valetta geht´s weiter zur faszinierenden Insel Gozo im Nordwesten von Malta. Dort erwartet uns eine traumhafte Ankerbucht inmitten steiler Felswände. Mit dem Dinghi starten wir zu einem ganz besonderen Highlight der Insel: Einem Felstunnel, der zu einem Binnensee führt. Bei Wellengang fahren wir rein in dieses Nadelöhr. Kommen wir dort heil durch? From Valletta, we continue to the fascinating island of Gozo in the north-west of Malta. There, a beautiful anchorage awaits us amidst steep cliffs. With the dinghi we start to a very special highlight of the island: a rock tunnel that leads to an inland lake. With the waves rolling, we sail into this narrow passage. Will we make it through safely?

Mit einer Nachtfahrt segeln wir von Siracusa auf Sizilien nach Valetta auf Malta, wo wir neben Freunden zum ersten Mal an Mooringbojen festmachen. Mit dem Dinghi geht´s quer durch die Stadt zur Post, wo wir ein ganz besonderes Paket abholen. Valettas historische Altstadt darf natürlich auch nicht fehlen. Taucht ein mit uns in die engen Straßen der Stadt, zwischen Meer, Mauern und Geschichte. We sail overnight from Syracuse in Sicily to Valletta in Malta, where we moor alongside friends for the first time. We take the dinghy across town to the post office, where we pick up a very special parcel. Of course, we can't miss Valletta's historic old town.
