32 foot sailboat crossing the Atlantic Ocean from Antigua to the Azores. Another yacht has run out of fuel and is having trouble reaching the Azores. Over the short wave radio (SSB) we learned about this and the sailboat Thule comes to the rescue. How to transfer Diesel fuel in the middle of the ocean? We solved this by sailing really close, perhaps a bit too close under these circumstances and so far from help, in case this goes wrong. While sailing side by side the other boat throws a line to us, and we attach the can of fuel. Throwing this in the sea, and with the line they can pick it up. We did this twice, and this maneuver was quite exciting. This was during 2003, when the yacht Thule and her crew of two was sailing back from the West Indies after a years adventure. The other yacht, Louise III, ran out of fuel on her way to the Azores. The day of this fuel transfer it was quite windy, but they still needed fuel to get to the Azores in a sensible time. Then it's good to have friends on the sea! Never run out of fuel in the Atlantic ocean. Never run out of supplies.
