Why Shizuoka Has My Attention

Leg Two begins in Shizuoka. I'm travelling to the Top Ten and Bottom Three prefectures identified by my True Longevity Index™—without revealing which is which until the end of the year. Shizuoka interests me because of its remarkably compressed Red Zone™: the period between healthy, independent life and the end of life. I entered the prefecture through Kosai, where women have recorded some of Shizuoka's longest periods of independent life. Shizuoka's official data put Kosai women at #1 in the prefecture in both 2022 and 2023. Over the coming days I'll travel across Shizuoka looking for the people behind the numbers—especially the Red Zone Rebels™ who continue working, moving, participating and living independently well beyond what the statistics might suggest.
