Tracking Microplastics | Windelo x Plastic At Sea

Understanding our impact is one of the first steps toward reducing it. 🌊 Plastic pollution and microplastics are a growing challenge for our oceans—and understanding how materials behave, degrade, and affect marine ecosystems is essential if companies want to make more informed choices. As part of an environmental transition training program for the Occitanie and Catalonia Chambers of Commerce, Windelo was invited to share its experience as a company already working to reduce the environmental impact of its products and practices. For our own teams, it was also an opportunity to keep learning alongside Plastic At Sea, a local laboratory specializing in the study of plastics and their behavior in marine environments. Their scientific approach offers a different perspective on a challenge that directly concerns the marine industry: understanding the long-term impact of the materials and products we put into the world—and using that knowledge to design better. At Windelo, this thinking is already reflected in choices such as basalt fiber, recycled PET foam, electric propulsion, and renewable energy production on board. The recycled PET foam used to build a Windelo 54 alone represents the equivalent of approximately 25,000 recycled plastic bottles. But environmental transition is never a finished process. It relies on science, knowledge sharing, collaboration, and a willingness to continuously question and improve the way we do things.
