Spearfishing Spanish Mackerel with plenty of sharks in the midst EP 12
We leave the beautiful, but very rough John Brewer Reef to discover more of the beauty and sea life that the Great Barrier Reef has to offer. The colours of the water are a kaleidoscope of blues and greens that you normally only see on the front of a postcard. We are hoping to catch plenty of fish before reaching Cairns and not having access to swimming further up the coast, however the waters are quite sharky, with few legal size fish to be seen. We always prefer to spearfish as you can be selective and there is no by-catch. Nothing beats choosing a perfect sized fish and a quick shot compared to dragging inedible or undersized fish up on a line only to hurt them whilst removing hooks and lures. Dan takes his chance on a group of Spanish Mackerel that are swimming around and I remain on watch for grey suits chasing an easy meal. An amazing shot - every spearfisher's dream?
