The narrowboats that travel along this canal move at a maximum speed of 4 knots, and often cruise along much more slowly. Pedestrians on the tow path easily outpace the boats, but that's part of what makes the trip so magical; by slowing way down, boaters are able to drink in the fresh air and absorb the astounding views of farmland that feeds the people of Wales. Canals once provided a vital transportation network for goods in the United Kingdom before the advent of the railroad. As needs and technology changed, many of these canals fell into disuse, but over the past 50+ years, through a combination of local activism and government support, these canals have been transformed into one of the most beautiful ways to travel through the UK.
