PURE Sailing TBT #2 | Worst Sailingday Ever | Heavy Wind and Waves | Broken Mast

This time I want to show you the toughest conditions I have on camera. The maximum Windspeed was about 32 Knots and the waves were gigantic. We were racing at the World Cup Final in Melbourne 2016. They needed that racing day for the status of a World Cup so they decided to sent us out. We came all the way from literally the other side of the world to sail that event so we went out, regardless that the conditions were way beyond our skill level. Unfortunately during the second race we capsized and the mast broke. I still do not know why. Usually carbon masts break at the impact. Diamonds and Cunningham were full on but still very unusual... Sad to say that it costed us our only possibility to sail a medal race. Why we capsized: We were close to the upwind mark when we capsized. Barbara wanted to pull the leeward daggerboard, a strategy in extreme conditions for bearing away. Unfortunately a big wave hit us and the boat capsized in the blink of an eye.
