After sailing across Indonesia’s Makassar Strait from Sulawesi, we anchored of a wildly welcoming village in the Kalimantan region of Borneo keen to explore the region around the river city of Banjarmasin. We really enjoyed experiencing a number of “must sees” on our list including Indonesia’s last remaining floating markets and the textile district with its unique Sasirangan traditional resistance-dyed fabrics. But what we discovered on the alluvial plains outside the city truly shocked us. Men chest deep in muddy water at the bottom of deep pits hand dredging gravel searching of diamonds in much the same, extremely dangerous, manner as their forebears had done for for over a thousand years despite a truly horrifying and still climbing death toll.
