How we BROKE & FIXED our sailboat BOOM Due to our 4.2 metre draft, we had to heel our boat over to enter Vuda Marina to haul out at the beginning of our refit as the channel was too shallow to enter. To achieve this we tied a huge inflatable tube to the undernearth of on side of our hull. To increase the heel we also attached our dinghy full of water and heavy material like chain to the end of our boom. Unfortunately when we weren't looking a friend hoisted the topping lift a little too far, not known that the vang was already fully extended, causing the boom to break. Accidents happen, and this certainly won't have been the first time our boom was broken! In this video we start the procedure to repair the break. To do this we had to 1) cut the boom in 2 pieces 2) create a mould of the shape of the boom 3) make a sleeve our of carbon fibre laminated in a vacuum to slide inside the two parts of the boom to glue them back together in a straight line. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you enjoyed this video please consider supporting us on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/SailingNV or with a one-off donation via https://ko-fi.com/sailingnv or paypal https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/sailingnv -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Products we've been using: West system epoxy resin https://amzn.to/3EXuTjo https://amzn.to/3ClCOG9 Fibreglass roller https://amzn.to/3QTSGDO Peel ply https://amzn.to/3pvczWp Interprotect epoxy primer - to prime and seal both above and below the waterline https://amzn.to/3pxOPAG https://amzn.to/3T9PvKb Perfection - 2 pack top coat to paint the interior https://amzn.to/3A50VGk Etch primer - to prime metals to prevent corrosion https://www.international-yachtpaint.com/en/sg/boat-paint-products/primers/etch-primer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts. We're refitting an ex Vendée Globe Open 60 race boat originally designed & built & raced by famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He competed in her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), finishing 5th, becoming the first non-frenchman to finish. We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! We’re planning to set sail again in Oct 2022, so with limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water! Subscribe to our channel&track our progress as we release videos about our journey as well as "how to" videos about anything boat related. Never stop to dream, never stop to sail!
