GULF STREAM CROSSING TO THE BAHAMAS | Sailboat Story 103

A Gulf Stream crossing to the Bahamas is a serious undertaking. It can be calm and uneventful, or it can be a life-threatening nightmare. The difference between the 2 usually comes down to having the patience to wait for a suitable weather window. We waited in No Name Harbor for nearly 2 weeks, and our weather window finally came to make the crossing. Light winds from the West, low swell with a long period between, and an early afternoon arrival stacks the odds in our favor. To make it all happen, we depart No Name Harbor at 4am, steer our little sailboat East, and head out into the open ocean. It's an odd thing to head out into the ocean in the dark, but in order to arrive at Bimini at mid-day, that's what has to be done. It's important to have ample daylight once you arrive in order to safely navigate around reef and coral heads. It feels SO GOOD to finally be in the islands again.
