Here’s an extra long video following Oceane as she journeys on land on Morovo Island, learning about their famous wood carving. We are currently anchored in Morovo lagoon, and have commissioned three villages for some wood carving projects for sylfia. Spirited and determined, Oceane decides to stay behind and spent couple of weeks on the island with the village. As you may know she wants to be a boat builder, and this was the first step to familiarize with ancient techniques! Go go girl! The Solomon islands have 67 language groups. Each group has a tribe, and different tribes made different art objects. Not only does the Solomon island art vary between language groups, it also varies over time. Artistic variation reflects their traditional cultures. Although the wood carving continues in some communities, it no longer flourishes throughout the archipelago as it did fifty years ago. Now days, the two most renowned areas for wood carving are Roviana and Marovo.
