Knowing better is a good life skill, and one I'm still working at. And on this trip the stupid mounts. In many ways, getting the crap scared out of you focuses the mind, and it's something that honestly doesn't happen that often for me (or us). But in an attempt to solve a problem that I knew in my heart was probably unsolvable, I took a risk that was way outside of what was called for. As for the second time? Well that was a subset of the first problem, which was the need to tack without reefing the headsail halfway first. This was not only hard on the sail but also carried the probability of the sail getting backwinded and caught on the removable inner forestay during the tack.
