Crossing the Atlantic Ocean, Vlog 55

Crossing one of the worlds major oceans is no small feat but Nikau has done it! We left the Canary Islands and traveled south via the Cape Verde islands where we had a great 5 day stopover re-fuelling, re-fooding and enjoying the change of pace and culture in these African islands. Then it was time for the big one, in convoy with four other boats we all left together one Sunday morning to cover the 2000 miles to Barbados. Over 14 days we faced all sorts of conditions, celebrated Christmas, had minor repairs to deal with and generally enjoyed the challenge of ocean voyaging. It was fantastic to arrive in Barbados just in time to celebrate New Years with all of our own little convoy of 5 boats plus another 7 boats we know that left the Canary Islands when we did and did the crossing direct - that's almost 60 people including 40 kids!! We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau. We are a family of 5. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand. We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures!
