Where has the water gone? We visit one of our favourite pubs in Chichester Harbour by bringing the boat in at high tide and walking ashore at low tide for dinner. We describe how to do tide calculations to arrive at a destination at the ideal time of tide for your boat and with the activities you want to do when you get there in mind. Using footage of drying out our Southerly 49 sailboat so we can walk ashore to the pub as an example, we show you how to calculate the tide height at any time, not just the time and height at high and low tide. This video is part of our new "Notes on Navigation" series. Note: Tide tables and tidal curve graph used in this video are from Reeds Almanac. https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/reeds-nautical-almanac-2020-9781472968494/ 00:00 - Introduction to "Notes on Navigation - Tidal Calculations" and presenter, Paul Shard 00:22 - What you'll learn in this video - how to calculate the height of the tide at any time, not just at high and low tide, and use the information to explore a shallow area such as Chichester Harbour. 00:58 - Start by looking up high and low tide information, e.g. Reeds Almanac or tide app. 01:55 - Cruise planning - outline the strategy for your cruise. 02:10 - Other information you'll need - port information, standard port for an area, time differences of tides in nearby ports. 02:43 - Understanding and using the tidal curve. 03:51 - Reading the chart and determining how much water you need for your boat's draft. 04:55 - Using the tide table and tidal curve to plan specific times when there's enough water for your boat. 06:02 - Summary of process - This is an exercise you can do at home before going to your boat. 06:35 - Electronic method using Navionics Boating app. 06:51 - Rule of Twelfths Tide Calculation 07:53 - Please tell us more topics you'd like us to cover in the comments below. 08:10 - Drying out SV Distant Shores II at Del Quay, Chichester Harbour.
