For centuries, these islands were the epicenter of the Asian spice trade as they were the only place in the world that grew nutmeg. The Dutch and the British fought for control over these islands, with brutal results for the native Bandanese population. These days, nutmeg is grown all over the world (thanks to the British finally transplanting some in the 1800's) but a visit to Banda took us back to a time when these islands some of the most expensive real estate in the world.
