In a world where saying "yes" seems to be the rule, it's high time to reclaim your time and energy. Here are three power situations where setting boundaries is very key in keeping balance and having self-care: 1.Declining Extra Job Projects: When one's plate is already full, do not undertake added burdens such as extra jobs that probably will not pay off. Time and effort deserve value! 2.Ending Phone Calls politely to focus: If a conversation is pulling you away from your focus, wrap it up with kindness. Remember, time and mental clarity are essential! 3.Declining the Last-Minute Plans to focus on yourself: Life is too busy sometimes, and you have to take a moment for yourself. It's okay to decline spontaneous invitations in favor of nurturing your hobbies and self-care. You deserve that time! Setting boundaries isn't selfish; it is necessary for your health. Then go ahead and start practicing saying no, or no thank you, and see how that changes your life.

Questions and Tangents #14 and this episode we continue down the rabbit hole regarding buying a used race boat. Recap Last time we discussed this I said, 'Don't do it - unless you REALLY want/ need to do it.' But as you did it anyway... (which I knew you would...) This time I'm saying- 'Since you can't take simple advice-;) here's 2 further hours of things to bear in mind.' I guess #3 (Owing a Race Boat Long Term) is coming soon... Another instalment of my review & expansion of the RYA Sea Survival Handbook, by Keith Colwell. This episode I spend an hour just going through all the things to prep onboard, before heavy weather comes in. An hour! As I point out in the podcast- whatever it is that you need to do on your boat is realistically going to take you longer than that, so FYI maybe best to listen in and find out what's on that preparatory to-do list now, because once the wind starts to blow, it's already WAY too late.  This episode dives once more into the seldom-explored realm of life rafts, highlighting the importance of visibility, stability, and utility in survival scenarios. The discussion includes a thorough examination of rescue measures, the practical usage of survival tools, and alternatives to traditional life rafts. This episode also discusses the importance of emotional management amidst rescue operations, underlining the importance of staying composed and making practical decisions for the best possible survival outcomes. On-board safety measures and the knowledge to operate them is critical. Learn about the meticulous safety checks every sailor should regularly perform, ensuring your gear is well-maintained and usable during emergency situations. Much more than just possessing the right equipment is discussed in this episode too - the need to maintain hope, emotional strength, and practice expectation management are highlighted as integral parts of survival equation Join us for insights on marine rescue operations, communication with rescuers, situational awareness during the rescue process, and how to effectively balance safety with morale. Last but not least, we discuss the complexities of interacting with rescue helicopters and the importance of understanding their communication language- all with an aim to leave our sailors well-equipped for dire circumstances. Questions & tangents returns for the last time in 2022 and I have lots to get through, questions I cover this episode range from Man Overboard recovery systems I don't know about to Mainsail reefing systems I don't know about to the safety of smaller boats in heavy conditions which is definitely something I don't know about.  Plenty of targets and confusion as always- and maybe even some answers to your questions - if YOU have a sailing question or conundrum you would like considering by myself and the Mariner community please write to me at csmthemariner@gmail.com (mailto:csmthemariner@gmail.com)  and I will try to help out! The loss of Colin Golder from his boat 'Morgan of Mariette' in the 2022 Newport Bermuda Race shocked the race officers and participants alike. In this episode, in an effort to learn from this incident, and in so doing memorialize Colins' memory, I go through the incident report prepared by US Sailing and attempt to distil what lessons I can with the intention of increasing the sailing community's understanding of what was done correctly, what could have been improved and discuss how ongoing Safety at Sea training could be modified to help prevent similar accidents in the future. This episode I discuss my ideas for a new race- The Nova Round the World Yacht Race. With the Classic Challenge division of the Ocean Globe Race now cancelled despite my best attempts to keep it alive, the opportunity suddenly exists to create a North American RTW sailing event to give the Ocean Globe Race Classic Division boats somewhere to race in 2023/24. I have given this a lot of consideration but I would really like some input from you on this idea, so if you have an opinion to share please do so at the email address below. Just before you go.... Halfway between New Zealand & Cape Horn I suffer critical damage to my mainsail between reefs 2 & 3, a 6 ft (2m) tear has opened up in the leech of my mainsail and unless it is fixed I cannot fly the sail and I will not only be last in the race but also in a very dangerous position 1000's of Miles form shore. Suddenly all thought of competition is forgotten and I am in survival mode as I struggle to deal emotionally and physically with a major repair on deck at 'Point Nemo' the most remote point on the planet in freezing conditions and heavy seas. If you have any questions you would like answering please send them to csmthemariner@gmail.com  (mailto:csmthemariner@gmail.com) If you recognize that creating this content requires hours of effort and you would like to help support for the equivalent of 25cents per episode please visit my Patreon Site (https://www.patreon.com/themariner) and select the $2 per month option. Slowly sailing my 2010 Precision 18 sailboat at mid-day in very light winds on a beautiful Rocky Mountain lake. This episode features very light air sailing (aka: "ghosting") along the beautiful southeastern shore of the reservoir where I discover a new hazard just below the surface. With it's shoal draft keel, the Precision 18 can easily access shallow waters...as long as you remember to raise the centerboard! I have hit underwater obstructions with the 4'3" deep centerboard before, and it just bounces over them (as long as you are moving forward). It's not a pleasant experience though. This episode also shows off the Precision 18's superior light air sailing capabilities which come from the boat's "highest in class" sail area to displacement (SA/disp) ratio of 21.81. This episode features plenty of blue mountain skies, rocky shoreline, and gorgeous mountain views. Subscribe and follow @ColoradoSailing on YouTube for more original sailing videos, gear, boat maintenance, sailing tips and travel content as I sail my Precision 18 trailer sailer and Precision 16 sailing dinghy in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. #sailing #lakesailing #mountainsailing #saillife #sailingchannel #coloradosailing

When I think of Adlard Coles, I think of the publishing house, but the fact is that the person behind that same institution was first off a small craft sailor just like you and I. This, his first book, is the tale of his first ever, long-distance cruise. What a career lay ahead of him! Despite not really knowing exactly what they were doing, Coles and his crew ventured across the storm-tossed North Sea and into the sand bar nightmare of the Zuider Zee & Frisian Islands. Unperturbed, they then crossed into the Baltic Sea, finally fetching themselves up in Copenhagen. Whist the voyage alone, in a 20ft yacht is noteworthy enough, Coles' narrative gives a unique glimpse also into the bubbling cauldron of unrest, that was sweeping Europe at this time, exactly 101 years ago. When I was growing up, my parents read me 'Swallows & Amazons' by Arthur Ransome.  That first book, and the series of adventure stories for children Ransome followed it up with, still to this day remain for me some of the most magical and endearing tales of my youth. You can imagine then, my excitement at discovering a Ransome story here in the Mariner's Library that allows me as an adult and a sailor to connect with Ransome once again and discover that he also was a sailor. His stories perhaps underpin my love of the ocean, developed at a young age- it's wonderful at 45 years old to discover that he really did know his tack from his gybe, and had already done his hours at the tiller, 60 years before I heard his stories. I have really enjoyed reading this story and I hope in turn you get pleasure from listening.  If you find that you like this authors style I would point you towards 'Swallows & Amazons' and the Arthur Ransome society in the UK  https://arthur-ransome.org/ If you would like to support this podcast, which is published for free, five days a week (Tues-Sat) please follow the link over to Patreon, where you can join our community and for $5 a month gain access to loads more exclusive audio books recordings just like this one.

I had never heard of this book before finding it here in the Mariner's Library but 'The Cruises of the Joan' seems to have attached a lot of very positive comments from contemporary literary critics & sailors alike when it was released. W.E.Sinclair has what commentators at the time refer to as  'a humble style in his approach to recording his voyages'. However, as his mileage increases with journeys throughout Scotland and round the British Isles, it becomes increasingly apparent that his delicately chosen prose is actually perfectly suited to allow even a reader 100 years hence to enter the story, share in the adventure and vicariously live through what promises to be some otherwise unbelievable adventures off the coasts of Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland later on in the book. If you recognize the value in this free content, please consider going over to https://www.patreon.com/themariner to support this channel with a $5 monthly contribution. This book is the chronicle of W.A. Robinson setting off on his 32 footer 'Svaap' from Panama, then taking two years to circumnavigate the world, during the interwar years.  It is a wonderfully written and diligent account, by a sailor who, although initially advertising himself as 'not a writer', goes on to produce the most wonderfully vivid and heartfelt story, that even now, a hundred years later, still stirs the soul to adventures beyond the West horizon. After reading so many sailing books from the past 120 years I am starting to recognize certain authors who I had never heard of before starting the Mariner's Library who were giants within the sailing community a life time ago. One of the most commonly referenced authors from the first half of the 20th century has to be Weston Martyr, and the book everyone compliments is 'The Southseaman'.  Just learning whatever I can about the man, his adventures and the nature of his bond with the sea plus a quick reading of the opening few pages told me enough for me to know that we would be in for a great tale, told by a master storyteller.  I for one, am excited to hear for the first time an old, but fresh-to-me story, that was so inspiring and enjoyable to my own, long-gone sailing heroes If you would like to listen to more about sailing, the sea and regular discussions about safety & seamanship; check out The Mariner Podcast, available on all podcast platforms. https://podcasts.apple.com/in/podcast/the-mariner/id1710667118 To support the production of this material please consider heading over to Patreon where for $5 a month you can get access to more audio books, videos, life streams and sailing discussion. https://www.patreon.com/themariner  Check out also, The Mariner Youtube Channel - where we have gear reviews, how to videos, seamanship training videos and on the water reports from all over the world. https://youtu.be/t0cfY6HqjLA Edward William Insurance. Often when I am reading books in the Mariner's library I am also hearing the story for the first time myself-  this book however, is different. Shackleton's escape from Antarctica is a story very well known to me and, to be blunt, has nourished my very soul in my  darkest days at sea.  There is no greater tale of seamanship, ingenuity, tenacity & loyalty- there are no greater heroes. This is that tale, told by a man who's skill upon the ocean is perhaps only matched by his skill with a pen; the Master of the 'Endurance', Captain Frank Worsley. If you would like to listen to more about sailing, the sea and regular discussions about safety & seamanship; check out The Mariner Podcast, available on all podcast platforms. https://podcasts.apple.com/in/podcast/the-mariner/id1710667118 To support the production of this material please consider heading over to Patreon. where for $5 a month you can get access to more audio books, videos and discussion. https://www.patreon.com/themariner  Check out also, The Mariner Youtube Channel - where we have gear reviews, how to videos, seamanship training videos and on the water reports from all over the world.
