Isle of Dogs Sea Cadet Unit The Isle of Dogs Sea Cadet Unit is based in two state schools in the Isle of Dogs, George Greens School, and Canary Wharf College. The IOD Sea Cadet Unit enriches young people from the Schools, from Year 7 to 11 (ages 11 to 18) sailing, Canoeing, Kayaking, Windsurfing in the local Royal Victoria Docks and Millwall Outer Dock weekly in the summer term. In the winter we run enrichment trips such as visits, ice skating, climbing and Thames boat trips. We also run RYA courses such as RYA First Aid RYA Sea Survival and Essential Navigation Courses as well as parade and drill sessions. The Unit brings together girls and boys from different schools, backgrounds to learn about each other and new skills and experiences over the long term. They also get the benefits of the training from the National Sea Cadets. This is not a short term fix. It is a long-term Unit to give young people self-belief, social confidence, leaders, team players, skilled, empathy and understanding their peers whilst being positive and motivated. We will take a Cadet at aged 11 and on their journey, they will become Unit Instructors and role models at 16 for the newer Cadets, improving their lives and being more focussed at school. All we ask of the cadets is long term commitment and kindness and willingness to give back to the Unit and School. Although the Sea Cadets Nationally get funding individual Units do not. For the Unit to run each week and all the background work to be done cost £15k pa. This gives the Unit stability, running each week with 30 Cadets and the ability to expand. We also spent around £15k pa on residential trips and our legacy fund. The benefits to the Cadets, School and local community is unmeasurable, the long term approach will break the cycle of poverty, empower local children, give them prospects, enrich the schools and provide a positive role model. We would love you and your company to be part of our journey, you can help by. Funding one of our projects below. Encouraging your staff to be Unit volunteers. We can help by Giving your staff the opportunity to volunteer, be part of the solution locally with long term enrichment, showing a pathway for Cadets for potential employment in your company. Our Projects Legacy Funding We have set up our own legacy program which is open to any Cadet. We will fund 50% of courses and training programs that will lead long term towards Cadets gaining national qualifications to become peer teachers for new cadets. At the moment we have three young ex Cadets who deliver the Sailing and Windsurfing Sessions for the Unit. This peer teaching enthuses new Cadets to follow their path for the future. Competitions We enter regional and national competitions with the Sea Cadets as well as National and international competitions in Sailing and Windsurfing. We have trained regional and national champions within the Unit. Thames Barge Trip with the Sea Change Trust. Having run a successful trip with this exceptional charity in the past we are running a week's residential for ten Cadets in Summer 24. During this trip Cadets will gain RYA Competent Crew and take a full part in the running, navigation and sailing on the engineless Blue Mermaid Barge. Part of our funds will make sure the Sea Change Trust continue with their valuable work. Ellen MacArther Cancer Trust Trip Having skippered for the Trust for the last three seasons we can come up with the idea of chartering the EMCT vessel for our Cadets for long weekends when the trust are not using their vessels. We WILL raise enough money each trip to sponsor a young person with Cancer to sail for a week with the trust. During the long weekends on the Solent we will work through Yachting skills and boathandling giving the Cadets a broad depth of knowledge and enrichment of a residential trip. We have one trip running this year and hope to expand this so we can enrich the Cadets and help fund more children with cancer to sail with the trust. UKSA Sea Program The UKSA SeaChange Foundation programme is a course offered to young people aged 14-17 from disadvantaged backgrounds, that teaches students how to be more confident and resilient, work together with peers and informs them of all the pathways into the maritime industry. This costs £525 inclusive of travel for our Cadets to attend, we hope to 50% fund this with our legacy funding. We thank you companies and people who have helped us so far in our journey and hopefully welcome you on board for the future. Update on our leg from Joselita bay to Cabo San Lucus
During our visit to Crete, we saw so much activity in the olive harvesting process. It turns out that the season for picking olives runs from November to February. Crete plays a crucial role in Greek olive oil production: approximately 200,000 tons of olive oil are produced annually on the island, out of a total of 430,000 tons in all of Greece! We visited on oil factory and filmed the entire process: from picking the olives, collecting them in nets, transporting in burlap sacks, ready for the ride to the local live press, within 24 hours after picking! At the local olive press, the olives are cleaned of twigs and leaves, washed and ground into a homogeneous brown paste. This paste undergoes centrifugation, till it is pure extra virgin olive oil. The oil is then stored in 1,000-liter tanks and then bottled in tins to protect it from light. The oil is then distributed to both local and international markets, allowing consumers worldwide to enjoy high-quality Cretan olive oil!
In this Episode I take you through an overview of Southern Ocean sailing that can be applied to any wild stretch of ocean and any long passage made in those kind of conditions. Taking my first Southern Ocean leg on the Velux Race as a framework I share observations and learning that came from that 6500Nm, 40 day, solo voyage and the sights and sounds that stick with me from that first nervous foray into the wilder stretches of the world ocean. From escaping half acre kelp patches that stop the boat to coping with Christmas alone I explain what it is to sail around the bottom of the world for the fist time and share some of the uniques sights that only a handful of people get to see like the huge Albatrosses that hover over the boat for days on end. As always plenty of personal anecdotes are mixed in with real world practical experience that cannot be learnt in any text book anywhere. If you like offshore sailing or just need a little escape form reality, settle in with a hot mug of coffee and prepare to go on watch once again, with The Mariner. Join us at Penmon Point as we experience one of the most magical sunsets and sunrises over the Menai Strait. In this vlog, we set up camp by the shore to capture the evening’s breathtaking sunset, with vibrant colours painting the sky and reflections dancing on the water. We wake up early and get back to witness a serene sunrise that lights up the strait and reveals stunning views extending all the way to Llandudno on the horizon. This video features not only ground-level beauty but also stunning drone footage. Watch as my drone soars above the coastline, catching a unique aerial perspective of Penmon Point and even following a graceful sailboat as it exits the strait into the open sea. The combination of the golden hour glow and the bird’s-eye view of the landscape (including the distant Great Orme at Llandudno) made this adventure unforgettable.

Often when I am reading books in the Mariner's library I am also hearing the story for the first time myself- this book however, is different. Shackleton's escape from Antarctica is a story very well known to me and, to be blunt, has nourished my very soul in my darkest days at sea. There is no greater tale of seamanship, ingenuity, tenacity & loyalty- there are no greater heroes. This is that tale, told by a man who's skill upon the ocean is perhaps only matched by his skill with a pen; the Master of the 'Endurance', Captain Frank Worsley. If you would like to listen to more about sailing, the sea and regular discussions about safety & seamanship; check out The Mariner Podcast, available on all podcast platforms. https://podcasts.apple.com/in/podcast/the-mariner/id1710667118 To support the production of this material please consider heading over to Patreon. where for $5 a month you can get access to more audio books, videos and discussion. https://www.patreon.com/themariner Check out also, The Mariner Youtube Channel - where we have gear reviews, how to videos, seamanship training videos and on the water reports from all over the world.
